Occupational Therapy for Children — Building Independence, One Skill at a Time
Occupational Therapy (OT) at Indigo helps children develop the physical, cognitive, and sensory skills they need to participate fully in everyday life — at home, in school, and in the community
Our Vision
To be South India's most child-centered developmental care center — where every child is seen, valued, and given the tools to thrive in their own extraordinary way
Our Mission
To deliver evidence-based, compassionate therapy that empowers children with special needs and gives families in Chennai the guidance, resources, and confidence they need at every step of the journey
What Is Occupational Therapy?
Occupational therapy for children focuses on improving the “occupations” of childhood — playing, learning, writing, dressing, eating, and interacting socially. When a child struggles with these daily activities due to developmental challenges, our OT specialists step in with targeted, evidence-based interventions
What We Treat:
- Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD)
- Fine motor delays (difficulty with writing, cutting, buttoning)
- Gross motor coordination problems
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)
- ADHD — attention and impulse regulation
- Self-care skill delays (dressing, feeding, hygiene)
- Visual motor integration difficulties
- Low muscle tone
What Your Child's OT Sessions Look Like?
Our therapists use play-based, child-led sessions in a fully equipped sensory gym and fine motor therapy room. We integrate Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT), DIR/Floortime, and task-specific training — all customized to your child’s therapy goals. Parents are actively coached so progress continues at home.
Signs Your Child May Need OT:
- Avoids messy play, certain textures, or loud environments
- Struggles to hold a pencil or use scissors
- Trips, bumps into things, or appears unusually clumsy
- Has difficulty sitting still or focusing during tasks
- Meltdowns around daily routines like bathing or dressing

There is no minimum age for an OT assessment. At Indigo, we assess children from as young as 12 months. The earlier a concern is identified, the faster and more effectively we can support your child's development. If you notice anything unusual in how your child moves, plays, or responds to touch — at any age — an assessment is the right next step.
Physiotherapy primarily focuses on movement, strength, and physical rehabilitation. Occupational therapy is broader — it addresses everything a child needs to function independently in daily life, including fine motor skills, sensory processing, self-care, handwriting, attention, and emotional regulation. Many children benefit from both, and at Indigo, our OT and PT teams work closely together
Yes — significantly. OT is one of the most recommended therapies for children with ASD. It addresses sensory sensitivities, self-care independence, fine motor difficulties, and emotional regulation challenges that are common in autism. Our OT program at Indigo is specifically designed to complement ABA and speech therapy for children on the spectrum
Every child is different. After your child's initial assessment, our occupational therapist will give you a clear therapy plan with a recommended frequency and duration. Most children benefit from 2–3 sessions per week, with meaningful progress typically visible within 8–12 weeks of consistent therapy
Sensory Integration Therapy (SIT) is a specialized OT approach that helps children who are over- or under-sensitive to sensory input — touch, sound, movement, and light. It uses structured, play-based activities in a sensory gym environment to help the brain process sensory information more effectively. Yes, Indigo offers full sensory integration therapy in our dedicated sensory room
